This is a photo of Cafe Schwabing, at the corner of Belgradstrasse and Hohenzollernstrasse, in the district of Schwabing. People in Munich love to sit at the outdoor tables when the weather warms up, even in February! I took this picture in February of 2008, and the weather was unusually warm and sunny for the time of year.

This is my daughter in Old Town Munich (Alte Stadt Munchen), at a Biergarten in the Viktualienmarkt (farmers food market). Everyone enjoys being outside when the weather warms up just a bit! Munchners run on beer just as a car runs on gas, and you don't need to have HOT weather to enjoy a beer. Barely warm weather will do just fine. I think they drink more beer than water. You can see the Löwenbräu (lion brew) sign on a building in the background, and Nordsee (North Sea), which is a popular fast-food seafood restaurant chain. They have little cafes all around the city. Löwenbräu was named after the founder of Munich, Duke Henry, the "Lion", thus, Lion Brewed.

This next photo is me with my twin grand-daughters at the entrance to the Nordbad swimming pool facility. There are two large stone eyes there, one on either side of the paved walk that leads to the entrance. There is a restaurant on the corner (unseen in the photo).

If you live in Munich, you will soon realize that bicylcles are a very important and common mode of transportation. Not just for single riders, but for moms and dads with babies in two. You will see a lot of these rigs around the city. And be careful not to stand on the bike lanes on the sidewalks, or you will be quite unpopular, and maybe run over!

Munich is the home of BMW (Bavarian Motor Works). One misty/rainy day we took time to visit BMW World, and the nearby Olympic Stadium, Meeting Hall and Swimming Facility. My son-in-law works for BMW, and he is now in the middle of his second move to Munich. He and my daughter ordinarily live in Greenville, South Carolina, where BMW has a large factory. But sometimes BMW sends him to Munich for 18-20 months at a time. Here's a photo of BMW World, which is a museum, and a place to pick-up your new BMW for European travel and eventual shipping to the USA.

Downtown, not far off Marienplatz, is the Deutsches Jagd un Fischereimuseum, which is just what the title says: "The German Hunting and Fishing Museum." In front of the museum are two large bronze images of a wild boar and a catfish. This is me beside the boar. Here's a link to museum information. Quite an interesting place!

Everyone likes the "English Garden" in Munich, one of the larger city parks in Europe. It's a great place to walk, to ride your bike, to sunbathe, and to entertain your kids. There are little playgrounds scattered around, and also a few "circus rides" and places to buy ice cream, etc. This carousel is at one of the entrances to the English Garden.

Greetings one and all. I got very busy yesterday, and was unable to find time to get to my computer and post another photo. But here is a snapshot of a window display in Munich. I suppose this clock shop caters to tourists (and three fourths of the people you see in downtown Munich must be tourists!) I didn't go in the shop, but I'm guessing the clocks were actually made in Germany, and do not have the little "made in China" sticker on the back (keeping my fingers crossed here).
I believe Munich used to have five (funf!) city gates (Tor) in olden days, and now has three. This is my wife and daughter standing in front of Karl's Tor. I see the plaque on the gate spells it "Thor." This is a nice street for walking and shopping, and is jammed with tourists. Here's a link to a really BIG photo. You can see the emblem of the little Munchen on the right, and the Bavarian shield on the left of the Tor. And here's an article about the city gates.
Our cars need gasoline, but people run on coffee. So, there are coffee cafes all over the place. In the USA we see a lot of Starbucks. In Munich you will see a lot of "San Francisco Coffee Company" outlets. This one is at Kurfurstenplatz.
